- What is the difference between an asylum seeker and refugee?
A refugee is defined as someone whose application for asylum has been accepted by the government having been recognised as needing protection under the 1951 UN Refugee Convention. These are people fleeing war and persecution.
An asylum seeker is a person whom the government has not yet recognised as a refugee under the 1951 Convention. Asylum seekers are not permitted to work and must instead rely on State support.
- What support can you offer?
We currently provide support to refugees through the Vulnerable Person’s Resettlement Scheme. We are also able to provide some support for asylum seekers through Migrant Help UK. We are OISC registered and so can give basic advice/information on immigration and asylum and protection issues. We also sit on strategic partnerships to identify key issues affecting our area.
- I need to learn English...can you help?
We offer a wide range of English classes in Chester, Ellesmere Port and Northwich. Even if you are an asylum seeker with no recourse to public funds we can help.
- I’m not a refugee but I want to help....?
We have a volunteer befriending scheme that you might be interested in. This pairs volunteers with refugees to help with common issues including learning English. Have a look on our volunteering page for further information and to apply.
